POSTED ON Nov 10, 2023

On Veterans Day, we take a moment to reflect on the courage and selflessness of the brave men and women who have served our country.

Arizona State University has announced that this year’s Salute to Service will take place from November 8th to 18th.

The event will celebrate the contributions of those who have served the nation and their communities, including military veterans, first responders, front-line medical workers, volunteers, and others in public service.

The event will be held in various locations across Phoenix metro campuses and will include a range of activities, such as the Salute to Service football game, the Thank You for Your Service Networking Event, Movies on the Field featuring “Top Gun: Maverick,” a multiday pop-up pub experience, and the West Valley Forward Pow Wow.

The Pow Wow, which will be held on November 11th from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., celebrates Native American heritage and honors the contributions of all U.S. veterans.

The event will include the return of the Native American Heritage Festival featuring the 20th Annual Veterans Day Weekend Pow Wow at the Fletcher Library lawn. The Pow Wow is a traditional gathering of dancers, drummers, elders, and families.

The Smithsonian has announced that the National Museum of the American Indian will recognize and honor the military service of Native Americans on Veterans Day 2023.

The event will include family activities, a presentation about the National Native American Veterans Memorial by memorial designer Harvey Pratt (Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma) and curator Rebecca Trautmann, hospitality for veterans, and a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial preceded by the presentation of colors by the Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society.

The schedule includes a Veteran bookmark activity about Native veterans who have served throughout history, a screening of “Why We Serve: Native Americans in the United States Armed Forces,” and a related exhibition.

The Colors and Wreath-Laying Ceremony will also be presented at the National Native American Veterans Memorial and will be livestreamed at AmericanIndian.si.edu/livestream. The Memorial Flame will be lit from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

In 2002, the Native American Veterans Association became a mutual fraternal non-profit organization 501 (c)(3). The organization provides assistance to all tribal and non-tribal veterans and their families.

Recently, the Hispanic Veterans Leadership Alliance called on the Department of Defense to fund research at Hispanic-serving research universities.

The HVLA urged the House Armed Services Committee to request a briefing by the DOD about research funding at minority-serving institutions.

Additionally, HVLA asked the Committee to prioritize research funding at Hispanic-serving research universities and to consider the Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Research Universities as one of the partners of choice.
