California State University, Chico celebrated the Lieutenant Robert Merton Rawlins Merit Award winners earlier this month. According to Chico State, more than $1 million in scholarships have been awarded to 800 students since the program’s inception. The award celebrates scholarship, extracurricular activities, and outstanding academic and professional accomplishments.
Speaking to Chico State Today‘s Sean Murphy, the 2022-23 Lt. Rawlins Merit Scholarship Recipients shared their hopes and dreams for the future as well as their inspirations.
Hannah Scholzen overcame a lack of confidence to find a niche in civil engineering, and first-generation student Kyle Mason is earning an Earth and Environmental Sciences degree. Theodore Greenfield hopes to be a high school math teacher, while he supports his wife and their young family.
Computer science major Chloe Koschnick has a “pretty big interest” in STEM education.” Currently, she works at a science museum and enjoys educating museum guests, setting up and maintaining exhibits, leading field trips for elementary school students, and operating its robotics and technical equipment.
Other award winners include Yanetli Navarro-Hernandez, who has taken part in internships and student-led research. She is also president of the American Concrete Institute, secretary of Women in Concrete, and a student ambassador.
The list of awardees also includes an aspiring social worker, a nursing student who has served as president of the United in Nursing via Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Club, and an animal science major who has helped set up farm and facility tours that teach students more about the industry.
In addition, Josephine Hernandez, also majoring in animal science, plans to earn a master’s degree and then, likely, a Ph.D. in animal science after graduation in May. A business administration student was also recognized as sixth for the perfect pitch at the American Marketing Associations International Collegiate Conference.
