The ScholarSHPE program has been selected as a finalist for the 2023 Examples of Excelencia by Excelencia in Education.
The program is recognized for its commitment to serving Latino students by using culturally relevant and evidence-based practices. ScholarSHPE is among 19 finalists across the country chosen for this award.
One of the most significant challenges facing Hispanic students in college is the lack of funds. SHPE addresses this issue by distributing over $1.8 million in scholarships every year to its members through the ScholarSHPE program.
As a result, ScholarSHPE demonstrates that SHPE Familia values its members as part of the STEM community and is committed to their future. This year, SHPE awarded scholarships to 346 students for the academic year 2022-2023.
The 19 finalists, including ScholarSHPE, were selected through a rigorous review process of 103 program submissions representing higher education institutions and community organizations across 20 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico in four categories: associate, baccalaureate, graduate, and community-based organizations.
The finalists in the Associate Level category are the Engineering Program at Wright College, City Colleges of Chicago, Wilbur Wright College (IL); the Community Health Worker Program at the Arturo Velasquez Institute, City Colleges of Chicago, Richard J. Daley College (IL); the Eagle Promise Program, Houston Community College System (TX); Early Childhood Education (ECE) ESL Embedded Tutoring and Peer Support, Reading Area Community College (RACC) (PA); and The Village at Cerritos College (CA).
In the Baccalaureate category, the finalists are the Spanish Community Translation and Interpreting Program at the University of Texas at Arlington (TX); the Accelerate, Complete, Engage Program at John Jay College, City University of New York, John Jay College of Criminal Justice (NY); CSUN Bridge to the Future Scholars Program, California State University, Northridge (CA); and the Program for Research Initiatives in Science & Math, at the City University of New York, John Jay College of Criminal Justice (NY).
At the Graduate Level, the finalists are the Graduate Equity Fellowship Program at California State University, Chico (CA); the Ánimo Latinx Counseling Emphasis, California State University, Fullerton (CA); the Certificate of Biliteracy at Texas Woman’s University (TX); Keep Running With Us at The University of Texas at San Antonio (TX), and The Bridge-to-Math-Doctorate Program in the Department of Mathematics, The University of Texas at Arlington (TX).
The Community-Based Organizations (CBO) finalists include College and Career Success Breakthrough Central Texas (TX); Career & Life Skills at El Próximo Paso/The Next Step PCS (Washington, D.C.); the Emerging Leaders Program Edu-Futuro (VA); the Scholars Program, New Futures (Washington, D.C.), and ScholarSHPE: Leading Hispanics in STEM (CA).
All finalist programs will be featured online in Excelencia’s Growing What Works Database, the only national, searchable database for institutional leaders, funders, policymakers, and others interested in effective programs for Latino students.
