Mental health is essential for emotional, psychological, and social well-being at every stage of life.

Unfortunately, mental health conditions are increasingly affecting young people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

On World Mental Health Day, the WHO tweeted that more significant investment is needed to break the silence around mental health. This will help young people and their caregivers to get the support they need.

Dr. Mary Gonzalez, a member of the Texas House of Representatives in El Paso County, tweeted that in 2018, 56.8% of the Latino/Hispanic population aged 18-25 with serious mental illness did not receive treatment, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

SAMHSA tweeted to assure people who need mental health support that they are not alone and help is available.

The administration is celebrating the 10th anniversary of “Talk. They Hear You” this year and observes October as Youth Substance Use Prevention Month and Substance Misuse Prevention Month.

Miami EdTech tweeted about the progress in Hispanic communities regarding mental health conversations.

The non-profit organization provides professional development to computer science and entrepreneurship teachers, develops curriculum and tech-enabled learning environments, and supports tech innovation through pilots, consulting, and mentorship.

Miami Edtech also shared an article posted on Verywell Mind’s website. Krystal Jagoo, writing for Verywell Mind, interviewed people in the Hispanic community about mental health for Hispanic Heritage Month.

Celia Mion-Araoz, a licensed mental health counselor and the coordinator of quality assurance and quality improvement at Community Health of South Florida’s behavioral health department, said she had grown up around new immigrants struggling to provide for their families.

Ana Ortiz Lugo, a clinical psychologist with MindPath Care Centers, said, “I believe that the Latinx community has come a long way.”

Jessica Reed, a licensed professional counselor, tweeted significant dates during National Hispanic Heritage Month, including World Mental Health Day on October 10, Indigenous People’s Day on October 11, and National Immigrants Day on October 28.

SAVE THE DATE: The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins Medicine is organizing an Executive Round Table discussion on October 26 to highlight the impact of anxiety and depression on workplace performance.

Business leaders like Tyrone Taborn, CEO of Career Communications Group, will participate.

Attendees will learn from experts and share their experiences. The session will cover various mental health issues.

The session will be led by the department director, Dr. James “Jimmy” Potash. To secure your virtual seat and obtain the Zoom link, RSVP to Monica Butta at mbutta2@Jhmi.edu.
