To celebrate the 50th anniversary, a student summit was held on the Student Services Lawn where students could learn more about the college’s history through a timeline of posters displayed throughout the celebration.

The event also included demonstrations of traditional dances, a luncheon in a big tent at the Fort Yates campus, and an honoring ceremony of past presidents and Board of Trustees members.

Guests were also treated to a traditional powwow and the 7th annual Handgames tournament, which were made possible through the efforts of the students, staff, and faculty of Sitting Bull College, honored guests, and community members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Check out the school’s timeline video to learn more.

Standing Rock Community College was established on September 21, 1973, and received full accreditation in 1984.

In 1996, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council made the decision to change the institution’s name to Sitting Bull College in honor of Chief Sitting Bull, a renowned Lakota leader who once said, “Let us put our minds together and see what life we can make for our children.”

Today, Sitting Bull College is dedicated to building intellectual capital through academic, career, and technical education, and promoting economic and social development.
