SciGirls is marking its 10th anniversary this year. Since premiering on PBS KIDS, the program has reached new heights. On its Facebook page in February, SciGirls thanked the National Science Foundation, Twin Cities Public Television, funders, crews, partners, educators, trainers, and SciGirls for making the show possible.
In December 2016, SciGirls met Dr. Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic woman in space. She was then director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center. The inspirational Dr. Ochoa can be seen on SciGirls Season 4.
A few months earlier, SciGirls had announced Latina SciGirls. The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded Twin Cities Public Television a $2.8M grant for a three-year educational media, outreach and research initiative called Latina SciGirls: Promoting Middle School-Age Hispanic Girls’ Positive STEM Identity Development through Media, Outreach and Role Models.
Latina SciGirls is six half-hour episodes of SciGirls filmed in Spanish. It shows groups of Hispanic girls and their Latina STEM mentors investigating culturally relevant science and engineering problems of interest to Hispanic communities across the U.S.
On February 22, 2020, SciGirls held its annual Women in Science & Engineering event at the Science Museum of Minnesota. The event featured pop-up learning stations led by women from a variety of science and engineering careers and also include SciGirls TV episode screenings and STEM activities.
