UTEP announces R1 Top Tier Designation, Big celebration on campus

POSTED ON Feb 06, 2019

Students, faculty, and staff at the University of Texas El Paso gathered  Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019 to celebrate UTEP reaching the top tier R1 designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

The Carnegie Classification has been the leading framework for recognizing and describing institutional diversity in U.S. higher education for the past four and a half decades.

Derived from empirical data on colleges and universities, the Carnegie Classification was first published in 1973 and subsequently updated as recently as 2018 to reflect changes among colleges and universities.

UTEP President Diana Natalicio and student government president Cristian Botello spoke about the distinction to the campus community, where they were joined in the celebration by the UTEP Cheerleaders, the Marching Miners, the Golddiggers and Paydirt Pete. The event culminated with the launch of balloons and confetti as the marching band played the UTEP Fight Song.

At a Research Forum in the Tomas Rivera Conference Center later that afternoon, President Natalicio thanked UTEP faculty and staff for enabling UTEP to reach this major milestone.
