University of Miami, Florida International University, Miami-Dade College and Broward College have partnered on talent development in South Florida and Latin America with eMerge Americas. The technology event announced the new partnerships with Florida International University, the University of Miami, Miami-Dade College and Broward College recently.
For the first time, all four higher-ed institutions will converge at the Miami Beach Convention Center for the eMerge Americas annual event on April 29-30, 2019.
“Talent development and retention is critical to the growth and sustainability of the Miami tech ecosystem,” said Felice Gorordo, eMerge Americas CEO. “As important ecosystem partners, we are honored to build on our long-standing partnerships with FIU, UM, MDC–and now, Broward College–to help develop a pipeline of homegrown talent and opportunities.”
Florida International University (FIU) and Cyxtera Technologies will be hosting their inaugural on-site cybersecurity augmentation training program at eMerge Americas. Drawing from experience in fund-formation, eMerge Americas and its partners will also assist FIU in launching and structuring an early stage, pre-seed venture fund.
“At FIU we are committed to life-long learning,” said FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg. “We look forward to joining forces with other anchor institutions in South Florida and help eMerge participants gain important skills to get and create 21st century jobs.”
Earlier this year, Miami-Dade College (MDC) opened the Cybersecurity Center of the Americas, a hyper-realistic training platform aimed at detecting, stopping, and remediating cyberattacks in real-time. MDC’s Cybersecurity Center will provide training to students, public and private sector organizations, as well as cybersecurity professionals.
“In partnering with eMerge Americas, MDC seeks to continue expanding our South Florida tech and entrepreneurial ecosystem, and prepare our students to compete in tomorrow’s workforce today,” said Eduardo J. Padrón, the President of Miami Dade College.
eMerge Americas has also partnered with the University of Miami, on the Latin American (LatAm) Roadshow to engage innovative university startups as part of the Hemispheric University Consortium, a platform for collaboration in technology, innovation and entrepreneurship.
“Through the Hemispheric Consortium launched at eMerge Americas, the University of Miami is partnering with the leading universities across the region and helping foster a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem throughout the Americas,” said Dr. Julio Frenk, University of Miami (UM) President.
Together, eMerge Americas and UM are hosting pitch competitions as a cornerstone of the LatAm Roadshow at the Universidad de los Andes (Colombia), Technológico de Monterrey (Mexico), Universidad de las Américas (Mexico) and the Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil).
The top two winners from each university will be fast-tracked into the eMerge Americas Global Startup Showcase in April.
For the first time, Broward College will have a presence at the upcoming eMerge Americas 2019 event showcasing their cutting-edge and entrepreneurially focused program both on the exhibit floor and on stage.

The eMerge Americas 2019 lineup, featuring all four higher-ed institutions, sets the stage for another successful year of innovative collaboration and thought-leadership with game-changers in the Miami tech community.
