Top Hispanic Women in Technology | Martha Cervantes, mechanical engineer, JHUAPL

POSTED ON Sep 13, 2021

Martha Cervantes is a mechanical engineer at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). She is an early-career professional but has already made an impact on JHUAPL diversity and inclusion strategies through the Cohort-based Integrated Research Community for Undergraduate Innovation and Trailblazing (CIRCUIT) program.

CIRCUIT aims to establish a nationally recognized, cohort-based leadership, research, and mentoring program for trailblazing students.

Martha is a trailblazer herself. She was part of the first CIRCUIT cohort in 2017. During this time, she distinguished herself as a leader. Based on her consistent technical excellence,  Martha was one of the first to transition from CIRCUIT to an internship and then to a full-time position.

Currently, Martha divides her time between research in her chosen field of mechanical engineering and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) outreach to mentor CIRCUIT students and develop the program.

As project lead, Martha is responsible for executing the program, which in 2020 grew to 18 high school students, 50 undergraduate students, and 5 graduate teaching assistants.

The program has expanded to support over 50 students annually from four area universities, and diverse projects ranging from undersea to outer space, including major activities in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.
