The Hour of Code is Almost Here

POSTED ON Dec 05, 2019

The Hour of Code, which started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, takes place during Computer Science Education Week. This year, CSEdWeek will run from December 9 through 15. Held annually in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (born December 9, 1906), Computer Science Education Week reports more than 100,000 CSEdWeek/Hour of Code events around the world.

The Hour of Code is a worldwide effort. The grassroots campaign celebrates computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities, but expanding to community-led efforts by 400 partners and 200,000 educators, according to Code.org, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to computer science in schools and increasing participation by women and underrepresented minorities.

“Every student in every school should have the opportunity to learn computer science,” Code.org says on its website.

The organization, which organizes the annual Hour of Code campaign, is supported by Amazon, Facebook, Google, the Infosys Foundation, Microsoft, and others. Code.org statistics show that 40% of U.S. students have accounts on Code.org; more than a  million teachers use Code.org, and 20 million of their students are young women.
