The HACU Scholarship Program is now open

POSTED ON Apr 12, 2021

This week, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) will hold its Capitol Forum on Hispanic Higher Education online. 2021 marks the twenty-sixth year of this event. According to HACU, meetings with congressional offices allow leaders in the Hispanic higher education community to speak with their representatives.

The forum will bring together academic leaders, public policymakers, federal agency leaders, corporate, community, and philanthropic representatives. The HACU National Capitol Forum on Hispanic Higher Education event will be held on April 13 through 14.

Last week, HACU released its annual analysis of recent Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System enrollment data. HACU’s findings show 30 new institutions became Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) during the past year.

Since 2013, HSIs have increased on average by 29 institutions per year, with California and Texas accounting for nearly 50 percent of all HSIs.

  • HSIs now represent a total of 569 HSIs in 28 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, up from the 539 institutions in 2018-19.
  • As a cohort, HSIs enroll 41.3% of Asian American, 35.6% of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, 24.4% of Black, and 15.8% of non-Hispanic white students.
  • The ten states with the most HSIs collectively enroll 308,755 Hispanic students and over 1.5 million students overall.

A majority of HSIs are in urban areas and are concentrated geographically, with 80% of these institutions located in California, Florida, Illinois, New Mexico, New York, Texas, and Puerto Rico. HSIs and Emerging HSIs are present in all but 12 states, including some less known for their Hispanic population, such as Idaho, Kansas, and Georgia.

The HACU Scholarship Program is now open. Students must currently attend a HACU-member college or university in the U.S. or Puerto Rico at the time applications are completed and scholarship awards are made. Click here for more information.
