Texas A&M University recognized by magazine for number of graduate degrees awarded to Hispanic/Latino students in STEM

This past week, Texas A&M University (A&M) announced that they have been recognized by the  Hispanic Outlook on Education magazine, as one of the top universities in the nation based on the number of graduate degrees awarded to their Hispanic/Latino students in STEM fields.

The university was ranked in the highest number of STEM fields, with numbers coming from the 2019-20 data from the National Center for Education Statistics’ Integrated Postsecondary Education Data system (IPEDS).

The magazine’s annual ranking evaluates graduate degrees in eight STEM fields, with A&M being ranked in the top 10 in the following categories: Agricultural/Animal/Plant/Veterinary Science (No. 2), Engineering (No.9), Mathematics and Statistics (No.7), Natural Resources and Conservation (No. 4), and Physical Sciences (No.5).

“This ranking is a sign that, by prioritizing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in recruiting, improving our campus climate and supporting student success, we are making impact as a public, land-grant university. Graduate students of all backgrounds are seeing Texas A&M as a place where they can thrive,” said Texas A&M Associate Provost, Karen Butler-Purry.

This recognition follows the announcement of the University being recognized as an eligible institution by the U.S. Department of Education to be a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), back in November 2021. HSIs provide universities that educate a majority of Hispanic and low-income students with additional access to funding for facilities, recruitment efforts, and other educational resources.

Other universities ranked in the top five are: Florida International University, The University of Florida, The University of Texas at El Paso, and Miami Regional University.

The Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine explains, that although the data presented within this list highlights Hispanic/Latino students in graduate STEM programs, there is still work that remains in order to increase their presence.
