Black and Hispanic workers remain underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workforce compared to their white counterparts. A Pew Research Center report found that the gap in STEM workforce representation is especially large for Hispanic adults.
Latinos make up only 8% of the entire STEM workforce, according to the Pew Research Center. Black people make 11% of the STEM workforce. Although companies and educational institutions are making strides to diversify their workforce, not much is changing.
The study also found that women make up most of the workforce when it comes to jobs in healthcare. However, they remain underrepresented in physical sciences, computing and engineering.

Although changes are being made, more needs to be done for equal representation in STEM. Programs like “Latinas in STEM” are getting more Latinos involved in STEM fields. These programs are helping with closing the gap between Latinos in STEM fields.
