SHPE is building the next generation of Hispanic leaders in STEM

The SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) is a non-profit organization that has been serving Hispanics in the U.S. since 1974. With over 15,000 student and professional members, it aims to develop future Hispanic leaders in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

On April 18th, SHPE members and staff attended a briefing organized by SHPE’s Government Relations department at the White House in Washington, D.C.

The briefing titled “Building the Next Generation of Hispanic Leaders in STEM” was hosted by the Office of Public Engagement and had 50 SHPE members in attendance.

The briefing aimed to facilitate a meaningful discussion between Administration officials and SHPE representatives. The goal was to identify ways in which academia, the private sector, and government can work together to meet labor needs, increase representation, and lower barriers for Hispanic students and professionals in STEM. Additionally, the focus was on building a sustainable education and domestic workforce pipeline for this community.

The SHPE delegation consisted of Hispanic students and young professionals pursuing degrees and careers in various STEM fields. They provided recommendations on the most effective types of support that would help them complete their degrees and feel included in an industry that typically lacks Hispanic representation.

Additionally, members of SHPE’s Academic and Industry Partnership Councils participated in the discussion, emphasizing the importance of creating a diverse workforce in both private and public sectors.
