San Diego State University (SDSU) has long been a leader in providing transformative experiences for students in learning and research. On Monday, SDSU posted a blog highlighting the many solutions that faculty and staff have introduced to continue academic and co-curricular activities.

The article by SDSU staff showcases the different ways faculty and staff are finding creative and innovative solutions to stay connected during the fight against COVID-19.

  • One department is utilizing Facebook to teach biology and culture in human populations. In this course, the COVID-19 pandemic is featured. The study includes real-time information on public health and the coronavirus disease.
  • An assistant professor of construction engineering is teaching virtual design and construction. Since the class of 22 is usually conducted in a computer lab, the professor records his lecture on Camtasia, loads it on YouTube, and posts it to Blackboard. He uses Zoom for group discussions.
  • As virtual teaching isn’t always plain sailing, the SDSU Center for Teaching and Learning set up teleconference sessions to bring faculty together. The Virtual Coffee Hours have been so successful SDSU says they will resume following spring break.
  • To keep the entire campus community connected, the Division of Diversity and Innovation (DDI) scheduled DDI Virtual Happy Hours on Fridays via Zoom. The SDSU campus community can log in to share stories, ideas, and laughter.
  • Zoom is also being utilized by Student Life and Leadership (SLL) to host virtual leadership workshops during spring break. After spring break, SLL will provide training and workshops daily through the start of finals to help students enhance their professional development.

Throughout, SDSU’s Instructional Technology Services has been helping to ensure the software programs needed for classes work with their personal computers. There are also plans to collaborate with other universities with the goal of improving learning outcomes and reducing equity gaps in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) online learning.
