SACNAS, Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans students and professionals in STEM, has issued a statement congratulating Dr. Josephine Rodriguez, a SACNAS member and recipient of the National Science Foundation Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) grant.
The $650,000 award is the largest National Science Foundation award to go to the University of Virginia’s College at Wise (UVa-Wise) campus, a division of the University of Virginia.
Dr. Rodriguez first joined the SACNAS community in 2010, when she attended the Linton-Poodry SACNAS Leadership Institute. It was during this leadership institute that she was able to network with the largest group of underrepresented minority STEM professionals in the country and make connections that would become her support system, SACNAS said.
Dr. Rodriguez thanked SACNAS Lifetime Member, Dr. Ulises Ricoy, “as he generously shared his successful S-STEM proposal with me and it was incredibly helpful in writing my grant.”
She also thanked the rest of her SACNAS familia adding, “this is where I first found my voice as a STEM leader and advocate for underrepresented students.”
“The NSF funding will support our mission to make higher education accessible to students, will boost the number of STEM scholars, and will prepare our graduates for graduate study,” Chancellor Donna P. Henry said in a UVa-Wise statement. “I congratulate Professor Josephine Rodriguez and her colleagues for their dedication to student success.”
SACNAS, which was formed in 1973 as part of the Chicano and American Indian civil rights movements, recently celebrated its 45th-anniversary conference.
