POSTED ON May 30, 2019

SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science) has announced its 2019 National Diversity in STEM Conference will take place Oct. 31 – Nov. 2 in Honolulu, Hawai’i. Over the course of the three days, college-level through professional attendees will be immersed in research and professional development sessions, a Graduate School & Career Expo Hall, multicultural celebrations, and an inclusive community of peers, mentors, and role models. Read more about the conference and artwork here.

Recently, members of  SACNAS took part in San Diego’s Rally for Science to highlight the important role of science in public policy. Panels included community discussions on climate change, vaccines, and citizen science. There was also a science expo and attendees attempted to make the world’s largest human DNA strand.

The aim of San Diego’s Rally for Science is to demonstrate the many ways good science affects day-to-day life, and show how policies supporting and supported by science can help us solve climate change, disease, hunger, and other global problems.

Participants included Dr. Angelica Rocha, a behavioral neuroscientist and San Diego for Science Rally organizer, Dr. Richard Armenta, professor at California State University San Marcos in North County San Diego and public health-epidemiologist, and Beto Vasquez, outreach coordinator of CREATE, University of California, San Diego.

SACNAS fosters the success of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans, from college students to professionals, in attaining advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership in STEM. The organization has approximately 6,000 members, a larger community of 20,000, with 115 SACNAS student and professional chapters throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
