Fuentes, an assistant professor in the Department of Performance Studies at Northwestern University, gave a talk March 5 on “The Scream, the Tide, and the Spider as Feminist Performative Articulations in the Work of Ni Una Menos (Not One Woman Less)” at the Center for Visual Cultures at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Fuentes discussed the tactics deployed by the Argentine feminist collective Ni Una Menos (NUM) on urban and digital spaces.
On October 19, hundreds of thousands of women across Argentina took part in a women’s strike and demonstration against femicide. Argentine feminist organizers relied on social media to organize the strike in less than a week. “Not even one woman less! We want us all alive!” was the slogan chanted by the women who marched.
Newspaper reports found that in addition to at least 138 protests that took place in Argentina, there were 25 protests in Chile, seven in Bolivia, five in Mexico, two in Uruguay, two in Honduras, and others in Paraguay, Ecuador, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and beyond.
