Two years ago, California State University at Stanislaus President Ellen Jun announced a fundraiser for a new success program. The initiative was set up to create scholarships for students who do not have a family history of higher education.
Since then, the First-Generation Presidential Scholars program has raised $265,000, according to Stan State, and more than 280 alumni have contributed to the fund.
In June, Stan State announced three freshmen will receive $12,500 for four years and three transfer students will receive up to $12,500 for two. The scholarships will cover tuition, fees, and expenses to meet a student’s cost of attending the university when combined with financial aid and grants.
JC Aguirre (microbiology research), Melana Cook (business administration), Harman Kooner, Guadalupe Marquez (sociology), Alexis Martinez, and Nathan Rohani will also receive a laptop and support from mentors. All scholarship recipients will join the University Honors Program.
“The Central Valley is home to an estimated 87 percent of our students, and these dedicated and visionary students have a strong commitment to staying in the Valley and giving back.” Junn said in a statement. “We are proud that 73 percent of our students are first-generation college students. It was only fitting that we create a scholarship that recognizes their accomplishments and aspirations.”
The First-Generation Presidential Scholars initiative is said to be the first in the California State University system to affect and attract students from a specific geographic footprint.
