Jailiene Miranda was featured in Hispanic Engineer magazine’s fall edition in 2017. She is now a test and evaluation engineer at Terumo Medical Corp. According to her LinkedIn page, Jailiene joined Terumo Medical after graduating from Temple University with a bachelor’s degree in bioengineering and biomedical engineering. While attached to Temple’s biomechanics lab, she worked with a rat model of spinal cord injury, capturing 3D kinematics of the walking rats with programs such as MATLAB and Python.

“I performed gait analysis tests of multiple rodents under IACUC (institutional animal care and use) protocol and analyzed animal tracking videos using MATLAB and motion capture software,” she told Hispanic Engineer magazine in 2017. “The result has been the award of a $714,000 grant from the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, which will allow the lab to pursue the goal of improving the functional recovery of those living with spinal cord injury,” she said.

Jailiene was also a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) – Temple University chapter. She served as treasurer for two years and, as part of the board, helped manage the chapter’s funds to promote professional development events to Temple University students.

As a college senior, she also took part in Million Women Mentors’ first statewide Girls in IT and STEM Careers event focused on driving more girls into science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)-related fields. Dozens of North Philadelphia middle schools and high schools were invited to Temple University’s College of Engineering. The event encourages women, particularly those of color, toward careers in STEM.

“These types of mentoring programs really encourage women to really rise to what they can do,” added Jailiene, then a biochemistry major, who also joined a simulcast with similar groups Harrisburg and Pittsburgh to discuss STEM projects.
