On April 22, Miami Dade College held three commencement ceremonies, celebrating the graduation of 12,000 students. The graduates included individuals who faced challenges such as displacement and migration, first-generation college students, and family members who achieved academic excellence despite adversity.
One of the students who graduated had enrolled at MDC in 2022 after arriving from Venezuela. Despite feeling insecure due to the language barrier, she received mentor support and mentorship, which helped her exceed her expectations. She was awarded the Academic Excellence Award and the American Dream Scholarship and was active in various student organizations. She plans to continue her studies and obtain a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
Another graduate, a Business Administration major and a U.S. Navy veteran originally from Colombia, is the first in his family to earn a college degree in the United States. He graduated with an impressive 3.9 GPA from MDC and has had a well-rounded college experience, achieving significant academic milestones.
One of the students in the first class of Rising Scholars at MDC was a technology major. This program covers tuition and fees for the first two years of college, which allowed Arnoudly to pursue a STEM career without financial worries. She emigrated from Haiti with her parents and nine siblings. Arnoudly had a passion for writing, which eventually led her to publish four successful novels.
Rachel and Michelle are twin sisters born to Mexican immigrants and the first in their family to earn a college degree. The sisters were fortunate to receive several scholarships at MDC, including the College Assistant Migrant Program Scholarship. Rachel plans to continue her nursing studies at MDC, while Michelle will move on to Florida International University to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
A brave immigrant from Cuba arrived alone in 2019 at the age of 17. His parents joined him two years later. Despite the language barrier, he earned his high school diploma and taught himself English through YouTube. As a business administration student, he is determined to succeed.
