This October, the National Football League, Hispanic Heritage Foundation, and Nationwide, the official sponsor of the NFL, partnered for the seventh annual NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Awards.

The awards recognize contributions of Hispanic leaders in each NFL market. Each award recipient was recognized at a game or event in their local NFL market. With support from Nationwide, each recipient will select an organization of their choice that serves the local Hispanic community to receive a $2,000 donation.

Washington Redskins Maria Fernanda Borja,  president, and chief executive officer, Latino Student Fund (LSF) was one of the 2017 National Football League Hispanic Heritage Leadership Awards recipients.

Maria has been President & CEO at Latino Student Fund since 2015.  Before then she served as the executive director of the organization for seven years (2008-2015) and operations manager for four (2004-20-8).

The Latino Student Fund provides opportunities for a strong academic foundation for PreK-12 Hispanic students, to promote higher education and professional leadership.

LSF was founded in 1994 in Washington D.C. by community leaders, educators and parents to combat the dropout rates in the Latino/Hispanic community. The year-around Tutoring Program has provided supplemental academic support to about 900 at-risk and underprivileged students since the year 2000. The Scholars Program has provided more than 750 scholarships worth almost $1 million since the year 2000. One hundred percent of seniors have graduated and been accepted into institutions of higher educations.
