Latinos in Science and Engineering announce new scholarship recipients

Latinos in Science and Engineering (formerly known as MAES) have announced the recipients of its 2020-2021 scholarships. The winners are student members of the organization, and they are all majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

The Founder’s Scholarship went to a civil engineering student at Texas A&M University-College Station, and the President’s Scholarship was won by an electrical engineering student at San Jose State Univerity. A third-year graduate student at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) was the recipient of the Graduate Scholarship.

Eight general scholarships went to students at Texas A&M University – Kingsville, San Jose State University, Ventura College, University of Texas at El Paso, Purdue University, and San Antonio College. See the full list below:

    Founder’s Scholarship: Sofia Gallardo, senior, civil engineering, Texas A&M University-College Station
    President’s Scholarship: Hugo Lopez Avila, sophomore, electrical engineering, San Jose State University
    Graduate Scholarship: Jorge Ahumada Lazo, third-year mechanical engineering graduate student, UMBC

General Scholarship recipients

  • Joshua Chavana, junior, mechanical engineering, Texas A&M University – Kingsville
  • Marcela Salazar, senior, chemistry, San Jose State University
  • Anastasia Rodriguez Torralba, a senior mechanical engineering student at San Jose State University
  • Jesus Perez, sophomore, a mechanical engineering student at Ventura College
  • Arahim Zuniga Herrera,  2nd-year graduate Environmental Engineering student at the University of Texas at El Paso
  • Norma-Gene Vega, a senior mechanical engineering student at Texas A&M University – Kingsville
  • Matthew Vining, senior environmental and ecological engineering at Purdue University
  • Hannah Ekema, a sophomore biology student at San Antonio College

Scholarship applications are evaluated on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, leadership, community service, and personal merits.

The 2021-2022 MAES Scholarship Program will open the application process in August. Scholarship categories include Graduate, Founders, Presidential, and General. Click here for more information.
