POSTED ON Feb 08, 2019

Florida International University  (FIU) will celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science on Monday, February 11. Activities are sponsored by science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)-related departments on campus.

“We’ll also have signs honoring FIU’s female STEM students and faculty, as well as world-renowned scientists who have contributed to the STEM fields,” the statement said.

Events include lectures by academics and community members, Arts & Culture, exhibitions, and campus life.

Sponsors include the School of Integrated Science and Humanity, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Department of Physics, Biomolecular Sciences Institute, Center for Women’s and Gender Studies, International Forensic Research Institute, and Stocker AstroScience Center.

In 2015, the U.N. General Assembly decided to establish an annual International Day to recognize the critical role women and girls play in science and technology, through a Resolution.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is implemented by UNESCO and UN-Women, in collaboration with institutions and civil society partners that aim to promote women and girls in science. This Day is an opportunity to promote equal access to and participation in science for women and girls.
