The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) has announced National Hispanic-Serving Institutions week will be observed from Sept. 12-18.
The observance takes place during National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated Sept. 15-Oct. 15. Each year, the government relations staff at HACU works with members of Congress to recognize the contributions of Hispanic-Serving Institutions in their communities.
Founded in 1986, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities represents more than 500 colleges and universities in the United States, Latin America, Spain, and school districts throughout the U.S. According to HACU’s website, it is the only national association representing existing and emerging Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).
The most recent analysis of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) enrollment data by HACU found that 18% of all institutions of higher education (559 HSIs) enrolled 66% of all Latino undergraduates. HSIs represent less than 20% of institutions but enroll two-thirds of all Latino undergraduates.
HACU-member HSIs are encouraged to observe the week with campus activities to heighten awareness of the important role HSIs play in improving access to education and advancing equity for traditionally underserved students.
