In their popular Internship Series, Handshake advises students to begin their internship search in January for Spring internship dates, May for Summer Internship dates, and August for Fall internship dates. Winter internship dates typically start in November or December.

Writing for Parker Dewey, Lynn Carroll gave 5 reasons why year-round internships are a smart move. “With some of the emerging models that look more like “gigs” than traditional internships, it’s easier than ever for companies to see the top 5 benefits of year-round internships,” she wrote.

Internships are essential to college life because they prepare you for your future professional endeavors, writes Ada Romano in the spring issue of Hispanic Engineer magazine. She also lists year-round internship programs that help you connect with professionals in your field and build relationships that can benefit you later in your career.

Amazon Propel Program – This 12-week internship program provides hands-on learning experiences for students interested in a software engineering career. In addition to working on an impactful project, you will have the opportunity to engage with Amazonians for professional development, expand your network, and participate in activities with other interns throughout your internship. To be eligible, you must have a minimum of one semester remaining after the training concludes. Please visit the Amazon website to apply.

NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) internship – Students partner with JPL scientists and engineers to assist with research efforts. Students also can participate in enrichment activities, including tours, lectures, and career advisement, arranged by the JPL Education Office. The program is ten weeks long and requires interns to work full time (40 hours per week) for the internship duration. To be eligible for this internship, you must be an enrolled undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) disciplines from an accredited university and have a minimum cumulative 3.00 GPA. Please visit NASA’s website to apply.

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program (SIPP) – The SIPP Internship program is designed to provide an enhanced training environment for next-generation scientists and engineers by exposing them to research challenges. SIPP interns will be allowed to complete internships aligned with ongoing U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management research under the direction of a host national laboratory. The training will be performed at the host national laboratory, utilizing its facilities and equipment under the guidance of a research staff member. Please visit the DOE website to apply.

Networking is one of the essential tools to get your name out there. Companies like to see young people eager to learn and connect with professionals in their field. In addition to building a network, you can make some money or get hired as a full-time employee at the end of your internship. Take advantage of all the professional opportunities available to you, and you will surely be successful in the future.
