How HSIs are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month 2020

POSTED ON Sep 08, 2020

Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month, and Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), which have an enrollment of undergraduates that is at least 25 percent Hispanic students, are paying tribute to generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched America.

Last week, the University of North Georgia (UNG) said students, faculty and staff on all UNG campuses can take part in its Hispanic Heritage Month events. Due to the pandemic, most will be offered virtually.

In California, the César E. Chávez Center for Higher Education at Cal Poly Pomona will explore social identities with the Indigenousness Wellness Circle. The Celebrating Latinx Heritage Month through Identity and Indigeneity online event is scheduled for Thur, Sept. 24.

San Diego State University’s Center for Intercultural Relations has also announced a series of events. Click here to view.

Earlier this year, New Mexico State University announced that it had been presented with an award for its efforts in promoting Hispanic Heritage Day. During a virtual ceremony held in June 2020, New Mexico State athletics was honored by the Collegiate Licensing Company for its efforts to promote its Hispanic Heritage Day event in 2019.

NM State said its Hispanic Heritage Day 2019 celebrated the culture of Southern New Mexico and Mexico. Fans were treated to Hispanic-themed food, games and entertainment.

Additionally, many activities included themed food trucks and the United States Army National Guard Mariachi Band.

Jari “WERC” Alvarez was also on hand to create an NM State themed mural prior to the football game on Sept. 14, 2019, against San Diego State.
