How College Campuses are Responding to Covid-19

This is a spring break like no other. In the wake of the coronavirus disease outbreak (COVID-19), we combed through some of the emergency updates at campuses across the U.S. Check out what measures these HSIs are taking.

California State University–Fullerton
March 12 – voluntary but encouraged virtual instruction begins.
March 25 through April 26 – virtual instruction mandatory.

California State Polytechnic University–Pomona
Cal Poly Pomona says its following recommendations from public health agencies, including Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

California State University-Chico
Classes will be canceled March 13–24 and resume Wednesday, March 25, following spring break.

University of Puerto Rico–Rio Piedras
Classes will continue to be offered as scheduled until the authorities concerned establish any changes.

St. Mary’s University
St. Mary’s University is extending spring break by one week for students. Classes will resume on campus on Monday, March 23.

Mount Saint Mary’s University
MSMU classes have been moved to an online format beginning March 14 through April 3. All campus locations will remain open and operational, but public events from now until April 3 are being evaluated.

California State University–Channel Islands
CSU is following guidance from the California Department of Public Health, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, CSU Chancellor’s Office, and regional public health departments.

Fresno Pacific University
All campuses are on spring break on March 9-13. Traditional undergraduate and many graduate classes are not scheduled to meet.

California State University–Long Beach
Face-to-face classes are canceled from Thursday, March 12 through Tuesday, March 17, although the campus will remain open. Alternative instruction will begin on Wednesday, March 18. Online classes will continue as scheduled.

Florida International University
Following the lead of Governor Ron DeSantis, FIU begins remote learning this Thursday, March 12, through at least Saturday, April 4.

University of La Verne
The university has established two committees to monitor and coordinate university actions: The Novel Coronavirus Monitoring Committee and the Academic Affairs Coronavirus Committee.

CUNY Hunter College
CUNY will begin an instructional recess, Thursday, March 12, that will conclude on March 18. On Thursday, March 19, all instruction will resume in distance-learning mode, and will remain so through the end of the spring semester.

CUNY Queens College
No scheduled courses will run, except those of fully online programs and courses otherwise authorized by campus presidents and deans.

University of California–Merced
The University of California will begin moving toward remote learning. Instructors are encouraged to begin using digital tools like CatCourses and Zoom to offer courses remotely, when feasible.

The University of Illinois at Chicago
Students have the option of studying remotely from home or from their campus residence after spring break.

Whittier College
Whittier College has decided to cancel classes on Friday, March 13. After spring break, beginning Monday, March 23, all classes will be moved online. Courses will continue to be taught remotely until at least April 3. An update will be provided by April 1 regarding plans for the remainder of the semester.

Saint Edward’s University
The university is posting updates every Friday as news of the virus develops. In the event of more urgent news, they plan to distribute information immediately.

San Diego State University
Spring recess will be held March 30-April 3. The transition to fully online or distributed classes shall be voluntary at the discretion of the faculty. Immediately after spring break, and effective April 6, all courses shall be conducted using fully online or distributed modalities, with exceptions.

California Lutheran University
Faculty have been directed to prepare to switch their classes to an online format in case that becomes necessary. No plans to move online at this time.

Saint Mary’s College of California
Faculty who are ready and able to move to alternative instruction methods are encouraged to do so right away. Everyone who is actively teaching this term should be prepared to move to alternate means of instruction by Monday, March 16.

University of California–Riverside says it is NOT suspending research activities at this time but shared several actions and recommendations.

University of California–Santa Cruz
Beginning Wednesday (March 11) lecture courses (including discussion sections) and seminars will be offered through alternative modalities (e.g., Zoom) to reduce face-to-face interactions as much as possible.

University of California–Santa Barbara
The campus will be transitioning to remote instruction through at least the end of April. All undergraduate students traveling for spring break should be prepared for the possibility of remaining away from campus through the month of April.
