Hispanicize and Latino diversity in Silicon Valley

Timed to coincide with Hispanic Heritage Month, the first-ever Hispanicize Silicon Valley Rankings were unveiled in October last year. The Hispanicize Media Group launched the company ratings of Latino diversity in Silicon Valley at Hispanicize L.A., an event that focuses on diversity in tech and innovation, digital content and the entertainment industry.

One of the most important insights of the 2017 rankings is that AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint are some of the largest recruiters of Latino tech talent.

According to the report much of Latino tech talent is clustered in the four major wireless communications service providers. because those companies are generally committed to finding and competing for their talents, a fact that flies in the face of many traditional Silicon Valley companies that complain they can’t find Hispanics, the 2017 report notes.

The 2017 Hispanicize Silicon Valley rankings were compiled by a panel of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, academics, marketing professionals, non-profit organization directors, and journalists, as well as leaders from the Latino Business Action Network, the Latino Startup Alliance, and California State University, Fullerton, which has the largest student body in California.

Hispanicize said the panel deliberately included telephone companies because they are evolving into companies that are also responsible for literally powering almost every device and/or app that is changing the world.

The rankings measure

  • Workforce Diversity
  • Retention and Recruitment
  • Marketing Investment
  • Community Outreach
  • STEM Efforts
  • Supplier Diversity
  • Diverse Representation in the Boardroom

The methodology used to rank the companies included corporate surveys, public information disclosed by the companies, news reports, and analysis from CulturIntel, a methodology using leading AI, machine learning, and big data tools to turn all available open-sourced digital discussions into actionable insights and decisions.

“It is estimated that by 2020 Hispanics will contribute to 74% of labor force growth yet they remain in single digits across most Silicon Valley companies,” says Liliana Gil Valletta, co-founder and CEO of CIEN+ and CulturIntel, a cultural innovation company partnering in the effort.”
