Recently, Florida International University’s College of Engineering & Computing hosted its Senior Design Showcase. According to FIU, the event is pivotal for graduating engineering and computing students. It’s the place to showcase designs, inventions, and solutions to real-world problems on campus.
One project offered a cost-effective solution that allows patients to visit physicians without fear of pain when receiving injections. Another developed a management plan to complete a construction project safely, on time, and in a cost-efficient manner.
Others started as a plan on how to improve a roadway. By the end, they designed lanes in each direction, a dual left-turn lane, street parking, bicycle lanes, travel lanes, and even added a median in the street to prevent angle crashes because of the reports made of crashes during left or angle turns.
Nearly 500 seniors were reported to have presented their projects to family, friends, mentors, and industry professionals.
Carina Cortes of the CRETE Construction Group told FIU News that the design showcase, which is held each semester, helps students take advantage of building relationships with professors and prepare for real-life challenges.
Some students told FIU News they plan to start medical school. Others shared they had an internship with the Walt Disney Company, and some have been hired as transportation designers or received offers as a superintendent for coastland construction.
