Dr. Ellen Ochoa, the first Latina to go to space, has partnered with Lil’ Libros Publishing to create a children’s book to inspire young girls. The book is inspired by Dr. Ochoa’s experiences as a NASA astronaut.

“I wish I had known when I was little that science is all about curiosity and creativity,” Dr. Ochoa told the Downey Patriot. “Those skills come naturally to young kids, and I hope this series engages kids and parents alike, in both English and Spanish, about STEAM concepts and excites them about exploring the world they inhabit.”

Lil Libros is a bilingual book series that hopes to teach children both English and Spanish. This also makes it easier for the many Spanish-speaking parents in the country to interact with their children as they teach them different aspects of Latino culture.

“At Lil’ Libros, we celebrate Latin American culture and important figures in its history,” the Lil’ Libros website says. “Our books honor beautiful stories like the life of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and Cuban music icon, Celia Cruz in English and Spanish with rich and colorful illustrations while also introducing them to concepts like first words, numbers, colors, shapes, and biographies!”

The series has included Latin singers, Celia Cruz and Selena Quintanilla-Perez, as well as Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo and the legend of “La Llorona.”

You can purchase books from the series online for only $9.99.
