First-Generation College Graduation Story Inspires the World

The story of a migrant farmworkers’ daughter has gone viral on Twitter and caught the attention of news outlets across America. Anna Ocegueda’s sister photographed her with their parents, standing in orange groves. Anna is wearing her graduation robes and is flanked by her parents in their work garb, including the bags they carry to collect fruit.

According to UC Merced, she posted the photo online and her tweet honoring her parents have reportedly collected over 16,000 likes and close to 4,000 retweets.

“I did this to inspire people and let them know that regardless of your hardships, you can still do it,” Ocegueda told the University of California, Merced. “I think it touched home for a lot of people,” she said. “They felt moved by it.”

Ocegueda’s parents reportedly came to the United States from Mexico as undocumented migrant farm workers. Her parents would pick oranges in the winter and spend their summers picking grapes and blueberries. They raised five children.

Ocegueda received financial aid to help offset some of the costs of paying her way through UC Merced. She took out student loans to cover the rest. She will receive her bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in Spanish this weekend.
