Nissan Chief Performance Officer José Muñoz, seen here at a 2018 car show, was honored with The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Foundation’s “Industry Leader Award” at the organization’s annual celebration.

The Industry Leadership Award recognizes individuals who have made meaningful contributions to the mobility industry.

Nominees have achieved success in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers, demonstrated innovation, made contributions outside of their industry, and exemplified through community education, philanthropic or government activities.

“I know firsthand what a powerful difference a STEM education can make,” Muñoz said. “I was fortunate to have the chance to pursue my strong interest in the sciences – and engineering, in particular. I want to ensure that more young people have access to the same educational opportunities I benefited from as a student.”

Muñoz  holds a doctorate in nuclear engineering from Polytechnic University of Madrid and an MBA from Instituto de Empresa Business School in Madrid, Spain.

Every year, SAE International awards scholarship money to undergrad and graduate engineering students. Funded through the SAE Foundation, these scholarships encourage academic excellence and help students around the world to pursue their passion for engineering.

Since November 2016, Muñoz has served as Nissan Motor Corporation’s chief performance officer. In this role, he ensures efficiency and transparency in Nissan’s global operations.

Prior, Muñoz served as chairman of Nissan North America, responsible for all operations, including manufacturing, engineering, design, sales and marketing, administration, and finance in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. During his tenure as chairman of Nissan North America, the region achieved record sales for both 2016 and 2017.

Five years after joining Nissan in 2009, he was named president of Nissan Mexicana. During his tenure, the division achieved the highest market share in its history and Nissan saw a 42-month run of being #1 in the market.

“Encouraging students to develop an interest in STEM subjects is critical to the future of the auto industry and to companies like Nissan,” Muñoz told SAE. “We need skilled engineers, accountants, scientists, analysts, and other employees who have a solid foundation in science, engineering, and math. Investing in STEM education is, in fact, an investment in our very own future.”
