Environmental sciences, a new major at the University of California-Santa Cruz, is attracting attention from new students. According to UC Santa Cruz NewsCenter, more than 450 first-year students and 18 transfer students have been admitted so far with environmental sciences as their intended major. Overall, the University of California-Santa Cruz has admitted more than 9,500 first-generation college students from California this year.

According to UC Santa Cruz, the number of Chicano/Latino students increased to 7,190 students, 667 more than the previous year. Other under-represented groups remained steady with the campus admitting 1,096 African American students and 151 American Indian students.

“UC Santa Cruz is excited to welcome this new cohort of first-year and transfer students and proud that students are choosing to further their education at our campus,” Chancellor Cynthia K. Larive said in the statement. “UCSC is committed to admitting students with the background and potential to succeed and to providing support to help all students achieve their potential, especially those who will be the first in their family to earn a four-year degree.”

The chancellor, who is a first-generation college graduate herself, earned a Bachelor of Science from South Dakota State University and a master’s degree from Purdue University, both in chemistry. She received a doctorate in analytical chemistry from the University of California, Riverside in 1992 while raising two young daughters with her husband.

Larive was confirmed as the eleventh Chancellor of University of California Santa Cruz on May 16, 2019, and began her tenure on July 1. She has been active in encouraging the participation and success of women and others who have been underrepresented in STEM fields.

The fall quarter begins September 21 and Instruction starts September 26. Welcome Week will culminate on Sept. 27 with a revival of the convocation tradition for new students combined with the investiture ceremony for Chancellor Larive.
