Education Secretary to speak at National Capitol Forum on Hispanic Higher Education

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) has announced that U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel A. Cardona will be a speaker during the virtual pre-conference day of the 27th Annual National Capitol Forum on Hispanic Higher Education. In the session on April 4, HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores will welcome Secretary Cardona to address key higher education issues.

Secretary Cardona’s focus on equity and excellence for all learners has driven his work at all levels of the education sector. He has led the federal government’s effort to support states in reopening America’s public schools for in-person learning amid the recovery from the pandemic, to nearly 100 percent of schools open today.

Under Secretary Cardona’s leadership, the U.S. Department of Education also has distributed historic funding through the American Rescue Plan to support K-12 schools and colleges.

Following the welcome remarks by Secretary Cardona, a series of pre-conference sessions focused on funding opportunities for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), will include presenters from the National Endowment for the Humanities, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Education, National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Energy and NASA Langley Research Center.

The pre-conference sessions are offered free to HACU members and registrants of the Capitol Forum. More than 300 participants are expected to attend HACU’s Capitol Forum on April 5-6. the premier HACU advocacy event for HSIs.

The opening of the Capitol Forum will include welcome remarks by HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores, followed by a session on “Higher Education Priorities for the 2nd session of the 117th Congress,” with opening remarks from U.S. Undersecretary of Education James Kvaal.

Speakers include Policy Advisor for the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Viviann Anguiano, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Policy Coordinator and Senate Liaison Marina Sangit, and White House Initiative Executive Director Melody Gonzales. Click here for more information.
