Diving Science Scholarships from the American Academy of Underwater Sciences

POSTED ON Mar 03, 2020

The American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) awards scholarships to graduate students engaged in or planning to begin, a research project in which diving is used as an important research tool or the research topic is diving science. The application deadline is June 30.

The AAUS is looking to increase the numbers of scientific divers through education, research and the advancement of standards for scientific diving practices, certifications, and operations. Click here to apply now.

All scholarship applicants must be an active member of AAUS at the time of application.

To learn more about the work of the AAUS and be inspired by current members read the stories of Marta Gómez-Buckley, a doctoral candidate at the University of Washington, who has participated in many research projects involving diving, and is doing research on Environmental DNA  samples collected from coral reef habitats in conjunction with fish samples.

“I feel that all the training I have received, first for my first recreational diving certification from the European organization CMAS, and more recently, AAUS scientific diver status through the training program at the University of Washington, has prepared me very thoroughly for my research endeavors,” she writes.

After she completes her Ph.D., she intends to continue collaboration with local groups in Tonga doing underwater research, and to contribute to the knowledge of the functioning of our changing coral reef ecosystems from the perspective of the smallest fish inhabitants!

Danielle Becker, a master’s candidate at California State Northridge, wants to dedicate herself to research that closes the gap between fascination with coral reefs and action. She has spent countless hours over the past seven years in academic, volunteer, laboratory, and fieldwork.

“The 2018 AAUS Masters Research Scholarship provided me with the means to travel to Mo’orea this past Summer 2019 to complete research pertaining to the first chapter of my master’s degree,” she writes.  “Thank you AAUS for awarding me the 2018 AAUS Masters Research Scholarship. I appreciate the AAUS Foundation’s continued commitment to supporting graduate student research.”

She was featured in the 2017 article by Paige Jarreau of LSU Science. Alicia is a Ph.D. candidate in the Biological Sciences Department. Her Master’s degree in biology from Georgia Southern University was partially funded by a fellowship from the National Science Foundation GK-12 Program, as part of which she taught science courses at local high schools in Georgia.
