Career Communications Group (CCG) was honored to have Lanny Smoot, a Disney Imagineer, on one of our Career Days in October 2021. Smoot spoke about his contributions to Disney parks as well as how he reached his level of success.

Disney has been on a mission to not only provide minorities with career opportunities, but also improve the visibility of minorities in popular media. The November 2021 release of “Encanto” highlighted the vibrant culture in Colombia as well as tackled family trauma in the Latino community.

The movie shows a family, the Madrigals, living in the hidden mountains of Colombia in a magical place called Encanto. All the children in the family possess magical powers except 15-year-old Mirabel.

Bruno, Mirabel’s uncle, disappeared because his gift of seeing the future caused chaos and tragedy for the Madrigal family. Alma, the matriarch, and the rest of the family refuse to talk about Bruno but Mirabel is curious about why he is not in the picture anymore.

Mirabel feels a connection to Bruno because like him, she feels excluded from her family due to her lack of magical powers. However, she is the only family member who sees the magical house cracking. She tries to warn her family, but her efforts fall short as nobody believes her.

Mirabel struggles with being seen by her family. She is overshadowed by her siblings’ powers and talent so much so that she starts resenting them and her grandmother. As tensions grow, the house keeps falling apart and the magic starts to fade.

The siblings begin to lose their powers and finally, Mirabel’s warnings are taken seriously. Mirabel brings back Bruno and the family starts healing.

The house falls apart but the family along with local villagers rebuild it. Finally, the family is back together, and all is well again. Bruno is welcomed back and the family’s powers are restored.
