DACA gets major support: Top 25 companies in Fortune 500 employ DREAMers

POSTED ON Oct 10, 2019

The stories of hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children have helped shape the conversation around DACA. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program allows individuals brought to America as children to become eligible for a work permit in the U.S. On November 12, the Supreme Court will hear arguments on the plan to terminate DACA.

“By making it possible for Dreamers to apply for work authorization, DACA has made pursuing higher education both possible and worthwhile for Dreamers,” says a brief of 143 business associations and companies in a friend of the court document filed in support of the Dreamers.

“Forty percent are currently in school—almost all of whom are working toward a bachelor’s or post-graduate degree,” the document continued. “And a substantial portion of those individuals are pursuing studies in STEM fields—acquiring the knowledge and skills that U.S. companies so desperately need to continue to innovate and stay competitive.” (See full list below)

The DREAM Act (short for Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act) was a bill in Congress that would have granted legal status to certain undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children and went to school here. Although several versions of the bill have been introduced in Congress since 2001, it has never passed.

An estimated 700,000 young people have benefited from the program. Education in U.S. public schools through grade 12 is guaranteed by law, but most (if not all) undocumented students face legal and financial barriers to higher education. Several states have passed DREAM Acts or enacted policies that provide in-state tuition. Requirements vary by state.
