CSU-Pueblo announces zero tuition increase for 2020-2021

As Colorado State University-Pueblo prepares for on-campus return this fall,  CSU-Pueblo President Timothy Mottet said last month that the proposed budget will not require a tuition increase. According to the statement, the campus remains grateful for the work at the System level of Chancellor Tony Frank and Chief Financial Officer, Henry Sobanet.

“This package leans heavily on federal stimulus funds, pairing them aggressively with System reserves and proceeds from Board-initiated refinancing,” said Chancellor Frank in the announcement. “These sources of funds allow us to substantively spare the campuses where the real work of teaching, discovery, and engagement occurs.”

CSU Pueblo began looking at cost-cutting measures early in the pandemic, Mottet added.

“Vision 2028 has given us guiding principles for this unprecedented moment in time and provided a detailed blueprint for creating a robust future,” he said. “We remain grateful to the System and to the Board for the ongoing investment in the transformative work that continues to happen at CSU Pueblo.”

Last fall, Dr. Derek Lopez, director of Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives of CSU-Pueblo, was selected as one of 24 individuals to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) Presidential Leadership Academy, La Academia de Liderazgo.

The initiative bolsters leadership development for HSIs and serves as a push for more leadership representation generally for Hispanics in higher education.

“CSU-Pueblo’s mission is to serve our system and our state by closing the educational attainment gap in southern Colorado,” Dr. Lopez said in 2019. “We know that far too few of our Hispanic students graduate with a 4-year degree. In fact, while our Hispanic population in Colorado is the fastest growing demographic, fewer and fewer Hispanic citizens are choosing college. We have to do better. We start this work by ensuring that leadership in higher education is representative of the student populations we serve.”
