Commencement Season, Spring 2020

It’s April, which means graduation season should be a few weeks away. However, commencement events scheduled in May through June are looking to be a little different this year. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE),  99% of college offices are interacting virtually.  No surprises then that current restrictions have transformed commencement season.

University of California, Riverside has announced it will make recommendations to the Chancellor by April 15.  A working group has requested input from students, faculty, and staff to inform its discussions through an online survey.

Florida International University announced that a virtual commencement will take place on Friday, May 8. Graduates will receive information about how to access the ceremony.

Originally scheduled for May 8, the University of Houston says commencement ceremonies will be rescheduled for late summer or early fall when it is safe for the community to come together again.

At Whittier College,  the traditional commencement ceremony is expected to be modified or canceled.

San Diego State University (SDSU)  will hold a virtual celebration on Saturday, May 16.

The University of California Merced postponed its May 16-17 commencement ceremony, but no new dates have been announced.

California State University, Fullerton has also not announced new dates and schedules for spring commencement.

New Mexico State University says the May Ceremony will be held virtually. Graduates should RSVP to attend the ceremonies online.

Texas State University postponed its Spring  Commencement to August 6, but the University of New Mexico postponed its Spring  Commencement scheduled for May 16 with no new dates.

California State University Long Beach will postpone spring Commencement and related cultural celebrations until after the COVID-19 pandemic crisis subsides.

Cal Poly Pomona has postponed all Spring commencement ceremonies until further notice.
