Class of 2021 will lead us to better days, says SF State President

On Friday, San Francisco State University added 8,400 graduates to its alumni body of more than 272,000. One-third of the first-time freshmen at the university are the first in their family to attend college, San Francisco State said in its online graduation ceremony presented on YouTube.

In 2024, the College of Science & Engineering plans to open a STEM building with teaching laboratories and classrooms. The new facility will replace Thornton Hall named for the first dean of SF State’s School of Science, Robert Thornton. He was an African American physicist who worked with Albert Einstein before joining SF State in 1956.

Special guest speaker Shamann Walton, president of the City and County of San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and an SF State graduate himself, shared three keys to success during the virtual Commencement ceremony.

“Never be content with average, and know where you’re going, Walton said. “And, as you’re successful, make sure you reach down and give back,” he added. “In the words of my favorite painting by Gilbert Young, ‘He Ain’t Heavy.’ Make sure you understand that, and always provide an opportunity for others.”

San Francisco State President Lynn Mahoney also gave an inspirational message. She spoke about the benefits of earning a college degree and expressed confidence in the new graduates to lead their families, communities, and the nation to better days.

The California State University Board of Trustees appointed Mahoney to serve as president of San Francisco State in May 2019. Previously, she was the provost and vice president for academic affairs at California State University, Los Angeles.
