Great Minds in STEM (GMiS), an organization dedicated to promoting science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers, has announced the HENAAC Award Winners for 2020. Among this year’s class of honorees is Capt. Mercedes Benitez-McCrary, chief, professional officer and chief, therapy officer for the U.S. Public Health Service.
Capt. Benitez McCrary is on active duty in the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She was nominated to receive HENAAC’s Albert V. Baez Award for her outstanding research in public policy, population health, rehabilitation, health literacy, clinical pharmacology, cardiology and allied health science.
The Albert V. Baez Award was established in 1995 to honor engineers and scientists with technical achievements and service to humanity.
A retired physicist, Baez is noted for his research in X-ray optics. As an educator, he spearheaded curriculum reform for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). As a humanitarian, he helped others improve their lives though Vivamos Mejor until his passing in 2007.
Past award winners of the Albert V. Baez Award include Ellen Ochoa, former NASA astronaut and director, NASA Johnson Space Center; George Castro, former educator and physicist; and Raphael Bras, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, Georgia Institute of Technology.
