California State University, Fresno is just one of more than 500 Hispanic-serving institutions celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.

This year, campus events included a college tradition presented by the Latina/o Faculty and Staff Association. La Bienvenida features entertainment, DJ music, student clubs and organizations, and a resource fair. Latin America is the focus of this year’s celebration and organizers encouraged attendees to share their culture by wearing traditional cultural attire.

Adelante! is presented by the Office of the President, Office of the Provost, and Associated Students Incorporated. This year’s theme is “Envisioning our Next Century of Service Y Excelencia.”

Salsa and Salsa was presented by Latino/a Programs and Services and the Amendola Family Student Cupboard. The event includes a cooking class while exploring salsa music from Latin America and the Caribbean. Another virtual event, Decolonizing Your Diet: Embracing Latino Foods, will be presented by Latino/a Programs and Services and the Amendola Family Student Cupboard.

Still to come is a virtual event presented by the Cross Cultural and Gender Center LGBTQ+ Programs and Services, featuring two members of the first LGBTQ+ Mariachi group.

At Florida International University (FIU), a student ambassador for the Office of Social Justice and Inclusion and a member of the Black Student Union, led the planning for a panel discussion exploring the Afro-Latine experience.

Other FIU events will include a panel discussion addressing leadership across heritage and history.

“Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American forerunners and Latin diasporic people as a whole, who have inspired others to achieve success. While the significance of the contributions of Hispanic and Latine people cannot be limited to just one month, this time is ultra-important in that it carves out specific spatiality to pause and honor the cultures, contributions, and heritage rooted in all Latin American countries through various methods of education and entertainment,” said David Bynes, director of the Office of Social Justice and Inclusion.

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) has announced it will host the Opera UTEP Hispanic Heritage Month Concert on Thursday, October 13. The special guest is Metropolitan Opera soloist and El Paso native Levi Hernández. He will join students and faculty singers in a concert of songs from Spain and Latin America. According to ASU, this concert features music by Mexican composers Manuel M. Ponce and José Pablo Moncayo. The event presents guest tenor Gabriel Martinez, soprano Martha Llamas, and pianist José Salazar along with the Tempe Symphony Orchestra. Click here to read more.
