Apply now for the Science Graduate Student Research program

POSTED ON May 04, 2021

The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science recently selected more than 70 graduate students for the Office of Science Graduate Student Research program. The awardees come from 55 universities across the nation. In this cohort, at least 19% attend minority-serving institutions.

Since 2014, the Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program has provided more than 700 graduate awardees from 150 universities with supplemental funds to conduct part of their thesis research at a host Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist.

The new SCGSR awardees are carrying out part of their doctoral dissertation research in DOE laboratories/facilities. Their proposed research projects address scientific challenges central to the Office of Science mission areas.

“DOE has long been where the nation turns for scientific solutions to complex challenges, and now more than ever we need to invest in a diverse, talented pipeline of scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs who can continue this legacy of excellence,” said Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm in a statement. “I’m thrilled that these outstanding students will help us tackle mission-critical research at our labs, and I can’t wait to see what their futures hold.”

The 2021 Solicitation 1 cycle is open for applications until May 5. Click here to apply.

Graduate students currently pursuing Ph.D. degrees in areas of physics, chemistry, material sciences, biology (non-medical), mathematics, engineering, computer or computational sciences, or specific areas of environmental sciences that are aligned with the mission of the Office of Science are eligible to apply to the SCGSR program.

The award period for the proposed research project at the DOE laboratory or facility may range from three to 12 consecutive months. Fermilab is supported by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy.

Students receive supplemental awards to pursue part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory or facility in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist. This opportunity is expected to advance the student’s doctoral thesis while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the DOE laboratory or facility.
