The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) has long been focused on increasing the representation of Indigenous peoples in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Recently, AISES announced a new project that aims to increase the number of Native American students in technology and engineering professions and in academia.

According to AISES, the Intel Next Generation of Native Coders project is a continued collaboration with Intel, a leader in the semiconductor industry that is shaping the data-centric future with computing and communications technology.

In the announcement, AISES said its computer science (CS) education and career readiness course, which started with schools on the Navajo Nation Reservation, will be expanded to Arizona, California, and Oregon serving Native American students. The course combines applied computer science, engineering, and college and career readiness in technology and engineering fields.

To apply, eligible schools in Arizona, Oregon, and California must already provide beginner-level CS content, a willingness to schedule this class as a stand-alone computer science class (grades 9-12), access to a computer lab, ability to video conference in the classroom, and a willing teacher and supportive administration.

AISES said teachers will get mentor support from current Intel employees and students will gain many of the skills and knowledge needed to be a successful candidate for college acceptance.

AISES staff will provide academic year curriculum support for teachers, and there will also be academic year support from Intel and AISES professional mentors who are computer science, engineering, and related careers. Training is available for an applied-CS course curriculum, course equipment, and supplies, including a 3-D printer, drones, weather balloon kits, Go-Pros cameras, Sphero robots, Samsung tablets, and other lesson supplies.

The goal of the course is to engage students and prepare them for CS degrees and careers through hands-on independent projects, technical education integrating Native culture, interactive CS skill-building activities, professional and peer mentorship, and college, career, and leadership development.

Interest forms are still being accepted. The deadline for submissions and supporting information is April 9. Click here for more information.
