Florida Bay faces several environmental issues, including seagrass die-off, hyper-salinity, algae blooms, and loss of native wildlife. In Fall 2022, the Everglades Foundation announced the recipients of its scholarships and fellowships, which provide financial support to graduate students conducting scientific and economic research to protect and restore America’s Everglades. One Ph.D. student from the University of Central Florida was recognized for incorporating genomic and geospatial data into an improved management plan for the Greater Everglades predator-prey system, while another from the University of Florida measured the effects of Everglades restoration by connecting inshore nurseries with offshore reefs.

Additionally, a Florida International University student researched carbon’s shifting sources and fates in coastal wetlands, while another measured the biogeochemical effects of marine wrack deposition on coastal mangrove soil elevation and blue carbon storage potential.

Over the past 15 years, more than 80 graduate students have received a total of $1.8 million in funding through the program, which provides 12-month scholarships and fellowships covering stipends, travel, and research-related expenses for full-time graduate students pursuing research.

If you’re a graduate student conducting research related to Florida Bay, you may be eligible for an Everglades Fellowship, which can provide up to $30,000 annually for stipends, tuition fees, travel, and other research-related expenses.

The Everglades Foundation welcomes applications from graduate students pursuing innovative scientific methods to advance understanding of the Everglades’ physical, chemical, or biological processes, as well as research on the economic impacts of environmental changes.

The fellowship is open to graduate students from all universities in the United States engaged in climate and Everglades-related research. The application deadline is Monday, July 31. Click here for more information.
