According to the UT Austin press release, the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence will be its first large-scale degree program and the only master’s degree program in AI from a top-ranked institution priced close to $10,000.
The master’s degree covers about two years’ worth of course content, to be taken at the learner’s own pace, and will be delivered in partnership with the online education platform edX. UT Austin’s Department of Computer Science and Machine Learning Laboratory will deliver the program.
Enrolled students will receive advanced training in natural language processing, reinforcement learning, computer vision, deep learning, and related topics. They will provide a critical framework for understanding the ethical implications of AI technologies.
The degree will equip students for various potential career opportunities – from engineering to research and development, product management, and consulting.
The statement went on to say that conscious of the ethical questions inherent to these new technologies, MSAI incorporates formal AI ethics training developed through a partnership between the Institute for Foundations of Machine Learning (IFML) and faculty from the UT’s Good Systems project – a research initiative to develop new AI technologies around core values that serve the greater societal good.
The IFML was designated by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2020. and, as stated on its website, staffed by researchers from UT Austin, University of Washington, Wichita State University, and Microsoft Research. The degree is pending final approval by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
Meanwhile, in the fall of 2023, Houston Community College will offer two new bachelor’s degree programs in Applied Technology in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics and Applied Science in Healthcare Management.
