Finding the right kid’s shoe size isn’t always easy. Sometimes finding different colors for small kids can be an even bigger problem. So when a nine-year-old asked basketball star Stephen Curry why his sneaker collection wasn’t available in girl sizes and colors, the Golden State Warriors guard decided to work with the grade-school student to design the latest shoe in his sneaker line.

On March 8, International Women’s Day, the UA ICON Curry 1 Mid Kids’ Custom Basketball Shoes were put on sale.
The Stephen & Ayesha Curry Family Foundation also launched a $30,000 scholarship, which is paid over two years and requires the recipient to take two or more science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)-related classes, each semester while mainstaing a minimum 3.0 GPA.

On March 9, Curry announced on Instagram that since partnering with Riley to make sure his basketball shoes were available in more size&fit and colors, a new educational program had been launched. Profits from the Curry 6 United We Win shoe will fund scholarships for the new STEM program:

“Just a reminder that one small gesture can lead to something truly special 🙏🏽! From a handwritten note 📝 to a $30k scholarship for Vivian Wu to pursue higher education in STEM. Riley Morrison changed the game. Happy for @ayeshacurry & I to be a part of this journey…”

The scholarship was awarded to Vivian Wu (right) at the Denver Nuggets game vs. the Golden State Warriors. Vivian also posted this message to Instagram.

“THANK YOU SO MUCH @ayeshacurry@stephencurry30 and riley and everyone behind the scenes! IM SO THANKFUL FOR EVERYTHING THAT HAS HAPPENED!! I CAN’T WAIT TO PURSUE HIGHER EDUCATION AND POSITIVELY IMPACT OUR WORLD EVEN MORE! you all are my inspirations!! and of course, happy international women’s day!! 💙💛💙💛💙💛”

Oakland Schools retweeted the good news from a local television station with this message:

“Congrats to Oakland Tech senior Vivian Wu, inaugural recipient of a $30K scholarship from The Stephen & Ayesha Curry Family Foundation to college-bound female students from the Bay Area! Wu boasts a 4.2 GPA & 300+ hrs of community service.”
