Last week, President Joe Biden declared September 10th through September 16th, 2023, as National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week.
In a letter from the White House, Biden called on public officials, educators, and all the people of the United States to observe this week with programs, ceremonies, and activities that acknowledge the many ways these institutions and their graduates contribute.
There are more than 500 Hispanic-serving institutions across America, which have helped to widen the doors of opportunity for generations of Hispanic college students.
Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) enroll more than 25% of Hispanic students. Only 19% (571) of higher education institutions meet this definition, but HSIs enroll 62% of all Latinx students.
UC Santa Cruz was certified with the Seal of Excelencia (2022-2025), recognizing its intentionality and historical effectiveness in serving Latinx students.
The HSI Initiatives and El Centro invited the UC Santa Cruz campus community to celebrate National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Awareness Week from September 11th to the 17th.
HSI Initiatives and El Centro recognize the importance of creating a campus community that embraces students’ voices and stories, allowing them to share their cultural knowledge and experience.
HSI Week is an opportunity to celebrate and raise awareness about the work done by HSIs in improving access to education and advancing equity practices for underserved students.
On September 15th, a Café con Pan event will be held for staff and faculty.
On October 10th, the HSI Leadership Committee, the Division of Student Affairs and Success, student organizations, UCSC departments and leaders will celebrate Latinx Heritage Month. They will conduct a film screening of the Strawberry Picker documentary and discuss it with the filmmaker, Juan Fuentes.
On Friday, October 13th, there will be a Plática with the Authors of Latinx Guide to Graduate School, and on Saturday, October 14th, there will be a La Bienvenida: Fall Student Welcome.
