November marks the celebration of Native American Heritage Month at NASA Stennis and NASA Shared Services Center.

NASA Astronaut Nicole Mann, the first indigenous woman from NASA to travel to space, belongs to the Wailacki tribe of the Round Valley Indian Tribes.

Mann served as commander of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-5 mission in 2022 and visited NASA Stennis for a post-flight mission overview presentation during a site visit in the summer of 2023.

The official Twitter account of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs in the Department of the Interior shared a link to the Proclamation on National Native American Heritage Month, 2023, to mark the beginning of the month.

The department is proud to celebrate the traditions, languages, and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Island communities and ensure their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive with each passing generation.

The United States Navy posted on Twitter, highlighting the new USNS Navajo, which was recently christened.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service expressed their appreciation for the vast richness of indigenous people, their cultures, and the ancestral wisdom they carry in honor of National Native American Heritage Month.

The Department of Agriculture announced that they will celebrate tribal nations and their communities during this month.

They will focus on the knowledge and practices used in cultivating indigenous foods to enhance land stewardship and climate resilience, strengthen domestic food economies, and address food insecurity.

Lastly, the SACNAS chapter at the University of Houston (named the 2023 Chapter of the Year) will host a talk on November 30 by NASA scientist Jacob Torres. Torres will share his experience as a native scientist and his research on Española Chile, the first plant grown in space.
